Reactivity Prevention

Why Early Training Matters: Preventing Reactivity Before It Starts

The 4-6 month window is a critical learning phase for your puppy. At this age, they are curious, adaptable, and forming habits that will shape their adult behavior. Proper training during this stage helps prevent future challenges by teaching focus, impulse control, and confidence in new situations.

Many puppies that seem "easy" at first can change quite a bit between 6-9 months of age. As they enter adolescence, a surge in hormones and growing independence can lead to new behaviors—some of which may be challenging. Even a previously well-mannered puppy may start barking at strangers, pulling on the leash, or showing signs of fear or frustration.

This is why it's so important to already have a relationship with a trainer before this stage begins. With expert guidance and custom feedback, you’ll be able to address changes as they happen, rather than waiting until unwanted behaviors become ingrained and harder to modify. Timely intervention helps prevent reactivity and keeps your dog on track to becoming a confident, well-behaved companion.

We offer classes tailored for both age groups:
🐾 8-Week Puppy Class (4-6 months) – Builds a solid foundation in socialization, basic obedience, and impulse control.

🐾 Adolescent Manners Class (6-9 months) – Helps prevent potential reactivity by reinforcing focus, leash skills, and calm behavior in exciting environments.

Starting training early gives your dog the best chance at growing into a well-behaved, confident companion. If your pup is already in the 6-9 month phase, don’t worry—we have the right class to help!
